We met our guide Johnn in the lobby after we had a paramedic checking our oxygen saturation tests. Everyone is good although Patti has a headache so to be on the safe side she had her 5 minutes of oxygen and we are off
We will have Johnn as a guide for the entire 3 days we have guides and we will have a driver for 2 of the 3 days. It is amazing that they will be able to put up with us. Maurice is our driver and with many countries driving in the city would be a nightmare for us. Old colonial Cusco has narrow roads and when you driver in the city there are speed bumps not to mention avoiding pot holes and uneven pavement. The van we are sharing is great. Johnn has a microphone so even if you are in the back row of seats you can hear his descriptions. The van is easy to get in and out of with hand grips and an extra step.
First stop as we head out of town. Saqsaywaman or affectionately known as “sexy woman”. This is a remarkable place and a chance to learn about the history of the Incas and some of the great engineering feats of these builders including large block walls perfectly interlocking without mortar.
Next was Pukapukara. This was the red fortress. It is much higher than saqsaywaman sits high above the hills looking down onto Cusco and was used by the Inca as a gateway into the city since the Chief Inca resided there. The Inca empire is so large and diverse that regions would trade food and materials and often food was only grown in certain parts of the country so this movement was vital. Okay I am boring you I am sure so we will do some photos.
