One Last Pisco Sour

One final entry to close our Peru travel log.  Thank you for following along and I hope this has been somewhat entertaining.  We have lots more photos and I hope to be able to get photos from my fellow travelers to compile a comprehensive picture of Peru through our eyes.

We we left off, I was freezing we had just completed the a trip to the floating island of Uros.  The island is actually made of reeds harvested from the lake and Uros is actually a series of islands and whatever tour you are on stops at one island.  The island we visited has 22 people in residence from 4 families.  The families work together to help maintain the island, the women create crafts of ceramic, weaving, wood carvings etc.  The artwork and tapestry is much more authentic than anything we have seen in the local markets.  The islands now have solar power for hot water use the money from the tourist to support and buy anything that can't be grown on the island such as meat and grains.  The island residents invited us into there 1 room shelter where 4 people reside it is about 10-12 feet wide by 12 feet long.  Talk about cozy.  There is an oven for central cooking and the home is without decoration although there was a small portable TV, I am not sure about the power to operate it.  The picture I posted is with the 15 year old daughter.  There is a ride in a reed boat to a central location that has solar energy and wifi as well as a snack bar for the benefit of the tourist.  Again this island is made of reeds.  It is amazing to walk of the soft surface that gives and that the residents have lived this way for over 500 years.

After a cup of coffee, back on the boat for a 90 ride to the island of Taquile.  This is actually an island within the lake.  The boat speeds along and bounces with water splashing the entire window.  There are several islands within the lake so with all the bouncing I was surprised I didn't get sea sick (I usually do), but Dan started to feel green.  This is what occurred in Cusco on day 2 when in the altitude only today the outing is planned for another 6 hours and there is no turning back.  They give him some herbs for the sea sickness but with no sleep and his GI upset we hope it shall at least calm somewhat.

The boat docks and then there is an uphill walk. (about an hour per our guide).  It really wasn't that long but we were VERY slow.  This is more of a challenge when your breathing is impacted and worse for poor Dan since he has some GI issues on top of not being able to breathe.  Some of the trail are just steps, there is a long uphill grade and a portion of loose rock that sort of resembles steps.  I was glad we brought the walking sticks although every thought we were being silly.  Probably were but I appreciate the safety.  It was the first time on one of our walks that I made it to the top before Dan.

On the way up we are past by a flock of sheep going down.  Weaving, spinning yarn, and knitting are the main activities as well as tourism.  There is a charge to visit the island that the locals use for improvements and what paid for the long walkway up to the top.  There are flush toilets, solar power and a kitchen.  Part of the visit is lunch in the community dining room.

We are greeted by the local chief who explains that on Taquile all the men knit.  They are taught at age 5-6 while the women are responsible for spinning the yarn.  There is also weaving on the loom by some women.  It takes a women 1 month, to weave a scarf that is 6 feet long working 5 hours a day 7 days a week.  Coca leaves are a stable and what the locals eat all day long for energy.  Yes the same leaf that metabolizes to cocaine.  Everything here seems ritualistic but it is a way of life on the island.  There are sheep so there is also milk and lamb as well as fish.  Everyone in the community has a job.  We are treated to local dancing and can even take part.  Of course after all the demonstrations we have lunch.  Quinoa soup with vegetables then some local caught trout.  It was baked and terrific, a tortilla type bread that was puffed up and most likely fried with a fresh pico de gallo salsa (yes too hot for me but tasted just the same). Rice and a finish of mint tea.  This will probably do Dan the best.

After lunch we had a choice to walk to the top of the island and down the other side with multiple steps and go back the way we came.   We choose to go back the short cut along with 2 of the tourist from France.  There were 20 people on this specific tour that was held in Spanish and English and we we were the only people from the US.  I find this amazing,  People from Mexico, France Spain, and England.  Truly a multinational tour.

Back to town after the 90 minute boat ride and the taxi back to our hotel.  All in all a great day.  Dan made it but he had his doubts.  We fly tonight at 10PM back to Lima and then home at 12 noon the next day.  A chance to sleep in a little and I will make sure with have feather free pillows.

The flight is on time.  We were talking at the hotel to another couple that were going out on the 8 PM flight.  I was worried the boat might be late so we are going to the airport 5 hours early.  Julicaca is a small airport so they won't check us in until 1 hour before lots of time to rest up and sit in a snack bar and people watch.

Our flight to Lima was uneventful and we were met with a coupon for a welcome drink which for us is a farewell Peru drink.  Dan was happy to be back at sea level and now is is more than happy to know he is on a plane bound for the US in 12 hours and 12 hours after that he plans to be in his own bed until we start our next adventure.  Stay tuned it is upcoming in March.

 Boliva in the distance.

Until we travel again!!

More advise. What not to do

After the brief rain storm and 1 hour taxi ride. We arrive at our hotel.  We are back to Casa Andina. This time premium with lake views. The sun is out, little cakes in the room to snack on, and the grounds are great. Lots of plants and green. Dan is a little short of breath but we are doing nothing today except hanging out. Tomorrow is an all day boat trip to the floating islands.  It is breezy on this edge of town. We are way away from the city center. Turns out over a million people in Puno.

So now for what not to do.  Upon arrival in Cusco we were advised eat light rest and limit alcohol. So what do we do but finish a bottle of wine and 2 dishes of nuts before dinner. We do split dinner but nothing light.  All this will come back to haunt Dan tomorrow.

Off to bed early but forgot to ask for feather free pillows. This created a major problem for Dan and he didn’t sleep at all.   We met our transport at 7AM to start our day trip and it is raining and more lightening and thunder. The guide tells us this is normal and the sun will come out.  Oh how I hope he is right.  Today is the first time in 2 weeks we needed more than one layer. I was wishing I double layered under my pants as well as my shirts.  It is cold and wet.

I will finish about the trip later since my phone is almost out of charge. I will post pictures first

Bad Travel Karma

Okay now it is just Dan and I.  An early morning departure from Lima and we need to leave the hotel at 0800.  No problems we are excited to go.  We restarted the altitude medications since Puno is higher than Cusco.

To the airport, no problems, check in and check the bags.  Locate the gate and sit down find a snack at the local starbucks.  We are ready to roll.  The plane lands and debarks at 1015.  We were suppose to board at that time.  We didn't think too much about it.  We couldn't see the sign that tells the next flight out.  This is travel tip number 1.

Dan hears our name, grossly mispronounced and races to the gate.  It seems it is the last call for our flight and still 20 minutes before it is suppose to take off.  We are directed down stairs and to the bus.  Travel tip number 2 ALWAYS check for gate changes.  Seems they can do that with only 1 announcement that was given in Spanish.   Lots of help for us anglo travelers that were at the airport 2 hours early.   Last people on the bus and there was another couple that were running across the tarmac that actually boarded after us.

The crazy thing is that there was only 1 other flight that day....  Safe in our seats.  Re look at Apple weather.  Partly cloudy   high in 60's and no rain.  Perfect for the next 2 days.  Get off the plane and to the waiting car and the rain starts.  Thunder and Lightening.  This does not bode well for a trip on the lake tomorrow.

The weather cleared about 30 minutes later.  The city of Puno is 1 hour from the airport.  I was wondering why the cost of airport transportation was $40 US.  Looking back it is a great bargain.  More later including photos and the 3rd thing not to do at altitiude.  Why didn't the Petersen's learn in Cusco.

Pictures and a health update!!

First the health update.  Patti convinced Don a trip to the urgent care before home.  Broken nose, and 2 broken bones in right hand.  Good thing he is left handed.  Patti will follow up on Monday with PCP and ortho

Tim ate 4 desserts...Said they were little
The fabulous 4 on the way to the airport in Lima.  Finally left at 3AM....oh the jet lag... Should have stayed and played in the casino instead.  More from the Petersen's journey to Lake Titicaca tomorrow or when we are home.

Travel Karma strikes again

Our last day in Lima.  Home tomorrow for Patti, Don, Blanca and Tim.  We meet after breakfast to plan out the day.  We are a little worried about Don, seems he missed a stepped leaving the bar last night and just think he wasn't drinking.  Clearly, Blanca losing her phone to the Travel Karma Gods affected Don's hip and caused the problem.

So onto our last day in the city.  Don and Patti don't want to take a cab into the city and walk around some of the churches and for sure the catacombs.  A high point on Blanca and Tim's list.  Dan and I are anxious to see more of the city so we are in the downtown car.  Apparently, according to the concierge we should not take a street cab only one from the hotel.

Don has decided that the best treatment for his hip pain since Advil, clearly has helped?? is to take a walk.  So the Inka Market is about a mile away and fairly flat,  Patti has a few more things to buy they will go to the market and then home to rest.

According to Patti's text to me:  Don and I walked to within 100 feet of the market and he tripped over the uneven sidewalk or his hip gave out and he fell face first and hit the pavement.  Police came, ambulance came, bystanders assisted to bus bench, someone brought water.  He had abrasians to his face, glasses smashed against the bridge of his nose and scratched and he landed on his right hand causing swelling and immediate bruising.  Of course, Don said he was fine, refused the ambulance, refused a cab and he and Patti walked back to the hotel over a mile back.   Patti iced the area, cleaned the abrasians, all the bleeding controlled.  Advil on board.  Tim realigned his glasses, Dan and I advised him he needs xrays as soon as he returns to the states since a delay in fracture care if his hand is broken, can mean surgery later on.  I guess it is best to travel with 4 nurses.

Last night in Lima celebratory dinner was moved from local restaurant to the hotel restaurant.  Don insists he is okay and plans to have dinner with us all.  Clearly, this is a sign from the Travel God  but that was just the beginning of the chaos that occurred at the end of the day.

Initial travel plans for Tim, Blanca, Patti and Don to leave on the 26th.  They were going to stay and extra day.  Dan and I are going to see Lake Titicaca the rest of the group had no desire to do that so were going home.  Talking with Patti she said her flight left in the afternoon at 1:50  they chose that time so everyone could get a slow start to the day, Dan and I are leaving in the morning at 0800 for an 10:50 flight.

Bam!! One more thing.  I was typing the blog and checked in for our flight, Patti and Don had printed boarding passes earlier and Tim and Blanca were in the upstairs lounge printing their boarding passes.  A text comes across from Tim to Patti telling her to check her boarding pass info the flight doesn't leave tomorrow at 1:50 PM but actually 0150 in the morning just after midnight, it is the first flight of the day.  A few 4 letter words flew back and forth and they started packing since they are leaving the hotel tonight  at 9PM.  Tim changed the rental car, Blanca the cab to the airport.  We figured out we could still have a farewell dinner but the flyers really didn't want to drink or eat heavily.  The Petersen's instead of having to leave first are the last to leave Lima.

Saddest part.  Patti didn't get her Martini, but Dan and I went to the attached casino to see if we could pay for the trip.  Dan promptly lost Patti's 17 soles, which is about $5.00 and I broke even and came out with the $3.00 I started with.  I guess it is hard to be a big winner when you are playing the penny slots in soles which is 10 sloes is $3.00.

I will add photos with the next entry...I promised Blanca I would start editing them before posting so we all looked better!!!

On to Lima

Lady on the plane across from Dan and I.

Lunch in Lima.  Outdoor cafe, in upscale shopping mall.  Gee, are we shopping again?  Dan has a new love dark Cusco beer, seems Tim and Blanca introduced him.
Sunset from our room.  Earlier in the day the hang-gliders came by the window.  We are on the 19th floor.  Patti and Don on the 8th floor and Blanca and Tim on the 12th.

Last Full Day in Cusco

Today is our last full day in Cusco.  So what is on tap?  Shopping, spa treatments, museums, shopping.

Today the plan is back to the market.  Yesterday the place-mat lady was closed.. So Tim, Dan, Blanca and I head out.  We have totally acclimatized to the altitude so only get a little short of breath when walking.  We are back to scouring the market for the vendor and to find a few final treasures.  Unfortunately, our great travel karma has hit the wall.  Blanca noticed after a purchase that her phone was missing.  We tried find my phone, no luck seems it was turned off immediately.  Next a call to Verizon.

Upside all the pictures were safe since she and Tim share the same cloud account, down side is who is going to take all the great photos.  Blanca has been amazing with the camera this trip.  Our chief photographer has limited himself to select shots.  Most likely because of the heavy camera and big lens.   You will have to  rely on me.(sorry).   I did try to upload photos from Dan's phone and they just wouldn't go, I am not sure if it is a data issue or just slow wifi and files that are a little oversized.  Oh well I will try and do better about photos and we need to share more.

Patti, Blanca and I attended a cooking class at the hotel.  Trout Ceviche.  Great flavor using Peruvian chiles although a little spicy for me, Patti who is allergic to fish gave hers to Tim and it was spicy for him also. The afternoon has us all doing different things after lunch.  Dan went off to have a massage at the spa,  I worked on the blog and then went down to the Jacuzzi and then had a pedicure.  Great foot massage and it was something I didn't do before we left San Diego.   Tim and Blanca were out shopping, bought pictures from a street vendor, went to the Machu Picchu museum.  Patti and Don picked up the scarf from the alpaca shop, went to the best bakery ever, and then the museum.  Stopped at the chocolate shop on the way back to the hotel.  Blanca had a massage in the late afternoon and then an early dinner and pack since we need to go to the airport for a trip to Lima in the morning.

Food:  Haven't said much about food.  The Cusco JW Marriott was phenomenal.   We would all have something different and everything was excellent.  From the chicken soup, hamberger, fried chicken patty, carne asada- peru, to beef skewers, Cesear salad, and shrimp scampi.  Portions are good sized and we all share so to taste each others dish.  If one can't finish we just hand the plate to Tim or Dan and it usually comes back clean.  Breakfast is a buffet smoothies, fruit, breads, cookies, cakes, danishes, cold cuts, cheeses, condiments pickled onions, pickles etc, oatmeal, bacon, sausage, quinoa and cook to order fresh eggs.  Need I say more.

Photos from cooking class, walking to the market and the Chinenera who is weaving daily at the hotel.  Blanca even was able to purchase something she created.  The hotel sponsors the weaver and Alpaca handler to allow guests to see and talk with local artisans and residents.  The hotel staff in Cusco has been great.  You sense everyone loves there job and are happy you came.  Dan and I are so lucky that Blanca arranged all the hotels at the Marriott family discounts.
